What is macular degeneration and what are the causes?
Macular degeneration is primarily a retinal disorder caused by ageing. Macular degeneration is broadly classified into two types: wet and dry. It mainly affects your central vision. There is no cure but with modern treatments and early intervention you are unlikely to completely lose your eyesight. There are a range of treatments available which can help preserve your eyesight.
Macular degeneration is a common eye disease that primarily affects adults over the age of 50. It causes blurred vision central vision due to the breakdown of the macula’s inner layers. The macula is the part of the retina that provides the eye with detailed vision in brightly lit conditions. Research has shown that the causes of macular degeneration are increasing age, family genes and environmental factors, including obesity, smoking, and diet.
Dry Macular Degeneration
In eyes affected by dry macular degeneration the macular loses light sensitive vision-related cells over time ie ‘wear &tear’. At present there are very few treatment options for dry macular degeneration. Luckily in most cases the disease progresses very slowly.
Wet macular degeneration
Wet macular degeneration occurs when bloods vessels leak blood or fluid into the macula destroying the light sensitive cells that provide detailed central vision. Wet macular degeneration usually develops in those who have existing dry macular degeneration. Around 20% of people with macular degeneration have a wet form. Wet macular degeneration can manifest itself in a variety of ways: ‘Straight lines appear crooked’ ‘A blob in your vision’ ‘Sudden blurred vision’ If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of macular degeneration and would like to discuss the treatment of macular degeneration please contact me immediately.
