Cataract Surgery & Artificial Lens Implants

Choose from a variety of artificial lens implants

Cataracts cause blurry vision, decreased contrast and colour vision (washed out vision) and increased sensitivity to light (glare). If it interferes with your daily life activities, it may be time to consider cataract surgery and artificial lens implants.

Cataract surgery is the process that removes your eye’s natural lens and replaces it with an artificial lens implant. Normally, your eye’s lens is clear. A cataract occurs when this lens becomes cloudy and surgery is mainly considered when your daily activities are affected. In some cases the eye’s lens can be removed and replaced with a premium lens implant even if there is no cataract.

Lens Implant Options

Variety of artificial lens:

There are a variety of artificial lens implants to suit your needs and your budget. They can be standard ‘monofocal’ or premium extended ‘monofocal’, multifocal or toric implants aimed at improving the quality and range of spectacle-free vision. These will be discussed at your consultation.

Most cataract surgery and lens implantation procedures are carried out as a day case under a local anaesthetic. You do not have to stay in the hospital afterwards and can go home on the same day. It is a very common procedure and 98% patients will have no problems (personal surgical audit data).

Complex Cataract Surgery

Complex cataracts

Some cataract surgery can be more complex due to the eye having characteristics which make the surgery more challenging (short or long sighted, small pupils, weak support), underlying eye disease (diabetes, macular degeneration), previous eye surgery and/ or general patient factors. These will be discussed during your consultation. Complex cataract surgery has higher surgical risks and may require sedation or rarely a different type of anaesthetic. The results are still good although the recovery period may take longer. Following routine non-complex cataract surgery and lens implantation it can take between 2 days to 2 weeks for the eyesight to clear and 4 weeks for full recovery. In the first few days after cataract surgery it is normal to have:

  • Grittiness
  • Watering
  • Blurry vision
  • Double vision
  • A red or bloodshot eye

Rarely (less than 1:2000) you might experience severe pain and sudden loss of vision in the first 48 hours of surgery. This could be a sign of infection and requires immediate treatment. You are advised to seek attention at your nearest emergency eye service. For optimal and holistic eye care it is important to treat any post-operative dry eye with moisturising eyedrops for at least 3-6 months after surgery. If you require new glasses, you will be advised to order them when your eye has completely recovered, which is normally 4-6 weeks. In rare instances it might take several months for your eyes to adjust to the new lens implants. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of cataracts and would like to discuss cataract surgery with lens implants please contact me for an initial consultation.
